Goyang-si Signs MOU for Prevention and Early Detection of Breast Cancer

Goyang-si (Mayor Jae-jun Lee) signed an MOU related to projects focused on women’s health with the Hansei University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and Bertis on the 12th to reduce socio-economic costs and create a healthy city through the prevention and early detection of breast cancer, cancer with the highest incidence in Korea.

The Mayor of Goyang, Director of the Hansei University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and CEO of Bertis attended the MOU signing ceremony on the day.

The MOU signing ceremony was part of the Hansei University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation’s contribution to the community and revitalization of family-owned companies. At the ceremony, Director Yun Jun-Yeong of the Hansei University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation said, “Now is the time for universities to prioritize corporate social responsibility and contribute to the community and spread knowledge.” He declared, “Hansei University would like to strengthen its competitiveness and become a small hidden champion university as a ‘glocal,’ not global, the university through community governance.”

Under this MOU, Bertis will provide free screening to specific female residents of Goyang using MASTOCHECK that compensates for limits of existing breast cancer diagnosis methods.

MASTOCHECK is a blood testing method that can diagnosis early-stage breast cancer using only a few amounts of blood. MASTOCHECK obtained a license from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for an in vitro diagnostic medical device in January 2019 based on its proven efficacy in the diagnosis of Stage 0, 1, and 2 breast cancer and obtained New Excellent Technology (NET) Certification in September 2019. As a blood testing method that compensates for the limits of existing breast cancer screening, it is a useful screening for subjects who wish to avoid X-rays or showing their body parts or diagnose conveniently and painlessly.

Goyang-si designated health centers in Deogyang-gu, Ilsandong-gu, Ilsanseo-gu, and three to four gynecological clinics in the jurisdiction to provide early breast cancer screening test for women who are in the vulnerable socio-economical group as well as who have a family history of breast cancer starting from next February.

“We are very thankful to Hansei University and Bertis for providing us an opportunity for early screening for breast cancer through this MOU,” said an official of the health center. The official also said, “We expect a decrease in the incidence of breast cancer and the development of projects focused on women’s health in Goyang.”
