Gunpo-si, Hansei University and Bertis Sign an MOU

to Support Free Early Screening for Breast Cancer

- Early breast cancer screening offers for 300 women living in vulnerable social groups in the jurisdiction starting from March

Gunpo-si signed an MOU for free screening for early detection of breast cancer, cancer with the highest incidence in women in Korea, with Hansei University and Bertis at the city hall on January 7th.

According to Gunpo-si, Bertis will support free breast cancer screening for women in Gunpo using MASTOCHECK that compensates for the limits of existing breast cancer diagnosis methods.

“MASTOCHECK” is software that screens for breast cancer using algorithmic calculation of the levels of three types of specific plasma proteins found in the blood of breast cancer patients. It can screen for stage 0, 1, and 2 breast cancer by using only a few amounts of blood, around one cc.

Accordingly, Gunpo-si will provide early screening for breast cancer to 300 female residents in vulnerable social groups in the jurisdiction from March.

At the MOU signing ceremony, Mayor Dae-hui Han said, “With this MOU, we will be able to build a happy and healthy society by improving the quality of life of community residents through this cooperation among industrial, academic and government institutions.”

Next, Mi-Gyeong Kim, the head of the health center, said, “I expect that we can increase citizen satisfaction by providing the benefits of the latest medical technology to the citizens of Gunpo first and creating a healthy community through the cooperation among industry, academia, and government.”

Breast cancer has the highest incidence in women worldwide. There are approximately 22,000 patients in Korea every year, and since 2015 the number of patients has been increasing rapidly, two times more than the past ten years.

According to Gunpo-si Health Center, usually, the incidences are high in women in their 40s and 50s in Korea. Yet these days, there have been more cases in women in their 20s and 30s due to hypersecretion of female hormones due to low birth rate, westernized diet, and more.
